Fifteen years ago dementia was already costing the world an estimated US$1.3 trillion each year, and the World Health Organization warned that the bill could almost double by 2030—a fiscal cliff that has sharpened interest in any intervention able to push back neurodegeneration’s onset (World Health Organization, 2024).

A new real-world analysis of more than 92,000 adults with type 2 diabetes now reports that weekly semaglutide—the GLP-1 analogue marketed as Ozempic—corresponds to a 33% fall in incident dementia, with a hazard ratio of 0.67 versus metformin and an even steeper 0.54 versus insulin (JAMA Neurology, 2025).
